sustainable development

For the team at the Relais St Joseph and the Camping de l’Océan, the words “holiday by the sea” and “sustainable development” are not to be ignored or to be considered just as a fashion statement.

Since 1999, the St Joseph association has opted for sustainable development, favouring the protection and maintenance of the environment as well as the discovery of part of the Breton patrimony which is rich in culture.

From the beginning :
- reusing paper as rough paper by the administrative staff

In 2001 :
- installation of solar panels on one of the shower blocks at the camping de l’Océan = reduction of energy costs

Since 2002 :
- the organising of activities aiming to help customers discover the riches of our patrimony (sea, wildlife, tales and legends) with the participation of local artists.

In 2005 :
- last part of the complete renovation of the Relais de l’Océan (installation of pressure aerator in all the showers, certain windows and doors changed to avoid loss of heat…)

In 2007 :
- purchase of an electric vehicle to use around the campsite grounds = noise reduction and no need for petrol.
- creation of a nocturnal market for craftsmen only = raising awareness about local products made the “old fashioned way”.
- creation of an organic vegetable garden open to all our customers = raising awareness about sustainable development and respecting the seasons of the produce.
- regular car sharing for business trips.
- sale of Alter Eco products (fair trade) at the Ty Mouss’ bar.

In 2008 :
- installation of economic lamps in the corridors and in the 51 rooms at the Relais = reduction of energy costs
- installation of new time switches in corridors etc = reduction of energy costs
- extension of the “Grand Large” hall = replacement of the PVC flooring by an ecological flooring (marmoleum).
- water management : weekly meter reading and consequent action taken with customers ; purchase of a tank with a pump for collecting water (used for watering the grounds).
- installation of a pressure aerator on the water heater in shower block 3.
- sale of Alter Eco products (fair trade) at the Ty Mouss’ bar.

With the help of our trainee, Laurent LE GUEN, we participated in the sustainable development week from 1st to 7 April 2008 (exhibition on the Gâvres site in Quiberon, on loan from the Erdeven municipality, Alter Eco slide show and slide show of the actions taken by the Relais de l’Océan in terms of sustainable development) and the sustainable development challenge.

The St Joseph de l’Océan association is convinced that sustainable development can grow from our small, everyday actions.
